Avalanche Crowned Stanley Cup Champions, Ending Lightning Reign
Colorado Defeats Tampa Bay 2-1 in Game 6
Avalanche Capture First Title Since 2001
The Colorado Avalanche have dethroned the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning, with a thrilling 2-1 victory in Game 6 on Sunday night. The Avalanche hoisted their first Stanley Cup since 2001, ending the Lightning's two-year reign at the top of the NHL.
Nazem Kadri, who has emerged as a key contributor in the playoffs, scored the game-winning goal in the third period. Valeri Nichushkin also found the back of the net for the Avalanche, while Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves in the victory.
The Lightning, who were seeking to become the first team since the New York Islanders (1980-83) to win three straight Stanley Cups, fought hard but ultimately fell short. Steven Stamkos scored the lone goal for Tampa Bay, while Vasilevskiy made 30 saves in the loss.
The Avalanche's victory marks a resurgence for the franchise, which has struggled to find success in recent years. This is the team's first Stanley Cup title since 2001 and their third overall.
