Egyptian Resort Closed After Shark Kills Tourist, Injures Another
Russian man killed in Hurghada shark attack
Unprovoked fatal attacks have taken place in the area this year
Egyptian authorities have banned swimming near a beach at an Egyptian Red Sea resort following a deadly shark attack that killed a Czech tourist and injured an Austrian woman, according to local media.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Sahl Hasheesh Bay, a popular tourist destination near the city of Hurghada. The victim, identified as a 41-year-old Czech man, was swimming about 650 feet from the shore when he was attacked by a shark.
Witnesses said the man was screaming for help and waving his arms before he was pulled underwater. The injured woman, a 68-year-old Austrian, was also swimming nearby when she was bitten on the leg.
Lifeguards and other beachgoers rushed to the aid of the victims and pulled them to shore. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
This is the second fatal shark attack in Egypt this year. In June, a Romanian woman was killed by a shark in the same area.
The Egyptian government has closed several beaches on the country's Red Sea coast following the attacks. They have also ordered tour operators to stop offering swimming excursions in the area.
